Whitesell canoes are designed and built to respond to the surface characteristics ON the water rather than the "cut through" designs of most other canoes. Our funnel shaped, high volume bow design keeps you riding on top rather than slicing through the waves to get wet. The unique pivot points on the side give incredible maneuverability and can be credited for how easily these canoes respond to your control strokes. Shallow arches near the ends, which fade into a rounded spoon bottom, adding stability and control while dramatically reducing wear. The side/chine design gives both the maneuverability and final stability for which the canoes are well known. Whitesell Canoes pioneered designs to be rolled easily. We're happy to explain the design basis for our easiest-to-roll reputation. No advertising "buzz words" here.
We don't alter "design" for nested shipping like mass producers are forced to. Every Whitesell Canoe is built for the specific paddler who bought it so that you can be assured every aspect of both design and outfitting is set to perform best for that person's specific height, weight, body build and paddling style. Where we trim the hull to set the gunwales (boat depth), how we build the thwarts (width and position) and outfitting are all set specifically to you. NO OTHER MANUFACTURER CAN MAKE THAT CLAIM! Only Whitesell Canoe Co. goes to that extent to make a canoe that will respond the way YOU want. It does make a big difference.

The Whirlwind is a dramatic variation for Whitesell, filling a void in the 12 foot market which previously had no high performance, yet paddler friendly boats. This narrow straight-side hull is asymmetrical and very dry running and stable. It utilizes a sharp chine to allow outside pivot turns but is not "grabby" like other 12 footers, allowing that side surfing fun you don't want to give up as well as allowing an inside-lean spin in critical "must-make" moves on tight creeks. Whitesell's stable-with-water and easy-to-roll characteristics are incorporated in this boat as well!

Tuff yet Lightweight Plastic Design

All Royalex is not created equal! Our proprietary sheets have specific reinforcement to assure strength where it is needed and avoid weight wherever possible. NO OTHER Royalex canoe has this reinforcement. The bow and stern areas of any whitewater canoe take a beating, either by the beginner in class II or the "hair" boaters in class VI. The ABS substrate material in these "highest wear" areas has been increased to 5 times the standard thickness in our "Standard Reinforced" lay-ups and over 8 times in our "Extreme Reinforced" and "Tuff" versions to insure a long useful life for your canoe. Another hull choice is our Whitesell "lite" - THE LIGHTEST Royalex canoe made. Please do not mistake this for R-84 lite as ours is a dramatically different product of our own engineering. We started research into "Lite" designs in the early 80's and produced our first light boat in 1985. While the "Lite" is not for everyone, it does tremendously increase performance by reducing the swing weight, giving quicker control responsiveness. Technical creeks, must do eddies and fast maneuvers are a breeze in a Piranha or Descender "Lite".

DEPENDABLE & Functional Outfitting

Exactly how a canoe is set-up is certainly THE most under-rated aspect of the performance of a good whitewater boat.

Many boaters have been in the sport for many years and have outfitted MANY canoes. BUT, each design has uniquely different requirements which get more and more exacting as you get into higher and higher performing boats. We take many boat orders over the phone and ship out to the boater without the opportunity to "fit" them in person.

Your custom built Whitesell includes: nylon/vinyl float bags custom made to fit your canoe, laced in with Bluewater mountain climbing accessory cord and held by webbing to D-rings, a saddle with storage, custom Yakima adjustable toe blocks and knee pads or a pedestal of mini cell/ethafoam with thigh straps/knee boots if you prefer, painters and even your name engraved on a brass plate, all specifically set to you, "river ready", the day you receive it.

Whitesell Canoes was the pioneer of custom outfitting new canoes 20 years ago. Certainly more canoes outfitted than all the other builders combined. We've got a good bit of experience at the task. On the other hand we are happy to sell you an empty canoe for you to do your own magic.
